Media Impact Paper
Based on information from “Digital Disconnect – Fake News, Privacy and Democracy” and additional research – select ONE of the prompts below and write a short essay (4-5 pages double spaced). Cite sources from the film, and from your own additional research, to support your argument. You need to include at least four other sources in the essay (the film can be one of the sources). You can use MLA or APA format for in-text citations and works cited page.
1) Research the rise of “fake news” during the 2016 or 2020 presidential election and write a paper examining all of the forces that contributed to it – especially the economic forces and algorithm-driven business models that McChesney details.
2) Research the “digital divide.” In your analysis, first explain what it is. Then summarize the latest data and information that’s available about it. Make sure to include recent information about the “digital divide” and the COVID Pandemic. Finally, based on your research, explain why you think there’s such a thing as a digital divide to begin with, and what it says about the claim that the internet is a democratizing force.
3) Research and write an analysis about the misinformation/”fake news” that has been spread through traditional media sources and social media during the COVID Pandemic. How did this happen and what are the effects? Explain whether you think having access to this information aligns with the claim that the internet is a democratizing force.
