The Accountable Care Organization (ACO) initially proposed, as you can see from this 2009 article, by the Brookings Institute was adopted and included in the March 2010 Patient Protection and Affordability Act refered to as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare. The Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued grants to physician groups and hospitals interested in forming ACO’s for the purpose of demonstrating a new delivery system that will produce quality care while reducing costs. The ACO has gained in importance with many hospitals and physician groups forming ACO’s . Despite attempts to dismantle the ACA, the ACO continues to be supported by the Congress and key policy makers as a way to change behavior by providing financial incentives to ACO’s who achieve quality outcomes while reducing costs. Referred to as Shared Savings. the ACO is seen as a model for Valued Based Reimbursement– paying for value not volume. Please read the attached article .
